Notes from a Visitor 7/5/2007
Hi, I am Christina Hahn. I just got back from a mission trip to Kenya with Bob and Ericka Clark. Bob told me to e-mail you aobut some of the experiences I had.
The trip to Kenya definitely changed my life! I had an mazing time, and God taught me so much. One of the best parts of trip for me was just looking at how the eople live when we were driving up there, or helping out in the villages. I looked at their simple ways of living, with a hut for thier whole family and not many possesions, and then I thought about where I lived, in prosperous, affluent, America. God really started to reveal to me that what is important to us is obviously not important to God. He created me in a very rich America, and the Kenyans where he created them, yet he loves us all the same. I guess I was seeing “rich” materially, but that’s not the way God sees it, the only important thing to God is that we are rich in Him. When I read the bible and it talked about that God would provide for all our needs, I guess I always saw that materially. Because I grew up in America, I saw being “provided for” as having a house, a job, a car, etc., but that’s not it at all! Philippians 4:19 says “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” God made it real that He provides for me because I am a child of the king, an inheriter of His glorious riches, not because of anything I have materially. I realize now more than ever, that I must run the race with my eyes soley focused of Jesus, and everything else has to be secondary to that. The worries of this life pass away, and nothing can be more important than pursuing the cause of Christ! That was a huge lesson for me.
Another highlight was going to the refugee camp in Kakuma. I didn’t really know what to expect, but what I saw really saddened my heart. The people in the camp were even poorer than others we had seen. In many cases thier rooves were made from paper food aid bags. I was sad that these people were here because they lost their homes, and sad that they had to live in a place that was so poor. We prayed with a couple of Sudanese families, which was really nice, and then we headed out. I walked next to the pastor from Kakuma (pastor Jeffery). I began to ask him about churches in the refugee camp. He said there were churches in the camp people could go to, but there were also some outside, like his that people could attend. He started telling me that people were coming to this camp from various countries, and many of them were becoming christians! When they are able to go home, he told me many were going back to thier ountries and preaching the gospel. It made me so excited to see the way God was totally using this thing that in my eyes looked so sad, for His glory! At the end of the day I still saw the sadness of having to live in a refugee camp, but the way God was using it to create indigenous believers to preach the word far outweighed the sadness. God is so much bigger than us, and it amazes me to see the things He uses to make His name famous.
There were so many other good times on the trip, I could go on forever! The Lord taught me so much, and I honestly wouldn’t have changed a moment of it.
Sorry, I wrote a lot, but this is the condensed version if you can believe it!
Have a wonderful day!
In Christ,
Christina Hahn
